Chinese New Year IS the talk of town when the year begins. It’s the time where families reunite (I’m talking about extended families and those from abroad) and friends come together for a warm and joyous celebration. So, really, when a group of people get together, we eat. Right from the day before CNY for reunion dinner, all the way till Chap Goh Mei. I kid you not.
The city will be abuzz with a celebratory vibe during this festive season, no more so than at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur. The hotel’s unique culinary concepts and traditional elegance blend to form a distinctive assortment of venues to entertain close family and friends in true festive style. The culinary team leaded by Chef Vincent Loo at the award-winning Chinese restaurant Celestial Court has fashioned a delectable 9-course set menu complementing this auspicious occasion. It is priced from RM 2288 nett per table of 10 persons or choose the Premium Set option at RM 3388 nett per table with a complimentary bottle of Hennessy Cognac.
Fret not if you do not want to over-indulge in a 9-course banquet, there are ala carte delights from RM38 ++ per dish and Yee Sang priced from RM 98++ available. Yee Sang 鱼生 is a Malaysian and Singapore cultural “must-do” before the start of any meal during Chinese New Year. Yee Sang (Yúshēng) literally means raw fish but since “fish (鱼)” is commonly conflated with its homophone “abundance (余)”, Yúshēng (鱼生) is interpreted as a homophone for Yúshēng (余升) meaning an increase in abundance. Therefore, Yee Sang (Yúshēng) is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. It is served primarily with shredded vegetables, crisps and condiments and tossed for good luck and blessings.
This year, Celestial Court’s Signature Yee Sang features Netherlands’ Arctic Char, New Zealand Tarakihi and Swordfish. It is available from 19th January till 5th March 2015 for lunch and dinner. Salmon is usually the classic choice for Yee Sang but the Arctic Char was just as good, if not better when it comes to texture and flavour. The thick slices of swordfish was tender contrasting the crunchy and tangy vegetables.

In the recent years, Treasure Pots (Poon Choi 盆菜) are also getting more popular. The Premium Treasure Pot from Celestial Court features 18 premium ingredients; Baby abalones, dried sun scallops, fish maws, mussels, sea cucumbers, Japanese mushrooms, Chinese mushrooms, sea asparagus, sea prawns, roasted duck, roasted chicken, Hong Kong kai lan, Australian broccoli, Hong Kong nai pak, siew pak choy, fresh scallops, groupers and Pacific clams. I often find Treasure Pots to be boring because it has only 1 taste but this was really yummy. The superior stock was very fragrant without being too heavy and I really liked the roast chicken, abalone, sea cucumber and dried oysters in it. The Treasure Pot is available from 19 January to 5 March 2015 for takeaway and is priced at RM888 ++ per portion in servings of five – advance order of one day in advance is required.
Other dishes we had were “Wok-heated Pranws with Nutmeg, Asparagus and Smoked Chicken” and “Stir fried Scallops with Pumpkin, Asparagus, Celery and Macadamia Nuts”.
The huge prawns were coated and fried in a crisp and thin coat of batter, tossed with a tangy and sweet mayonnaise on a bed of blanched crispy asparagus. The smoked chicken was flavourful but I didn’t think it was needed in this dish. Prawns and asparagus would sealed the deal.
Scallops, asparagus, celery and macadamia nuts are a norm in this “Spring” stir-fried dish. Usually thinly sliced lotus root would be included but here, cuts of pumpkin were used instead to give it more creaminess.
As with all meals, end it on a sweet note. This “Chilled Earl Grey Syrup with Hasma, Snow Fungus and Black Dates” was refreshing and a perfect ending for a scrumptious dinner like this.
